The Brevard County School Board adopted Policy 7540.08 on artificial intelligence at its July 28, 2026 meeting, setting boundaries for AI use across the district before the new school year. Every AI application or tool has to be vetted for privacy, data security and educational value before it can be used. Students' personal information may not be entered into or submitted to any AI system. Anything an AI generates must support Florida's state-mandated curriculum and standards, and teachers and other educators must check AI-generated content for accuracy, bias and appropriateness rather than using it as-is. Teachers need permission from a supervisor before bringing AI into their classrooms or curriculum. The policy was not adopted without friction: at an earlier board workshop, District 1 board chair Megan Wright said she found the AI world 'extremely uncomfortable' and thought parts of the policy were confusing. Brevard is one of Florida's larger districts, covering the Space Coast.
Who is protected: Brevard County public school students — particularly through the bar on submitting student personal information to AI systems — and, indirectly, families relying on curriculum-aligned and human-verified instructional material.
Legal detail
Brevard Public Schools Board Policy 7540.08, adopted at the July 28, 2026 school board meeting. Core requirements: (1) mandatory vetting of all AI software, applications and tools for privacy, data security and educational value prior to use; (2) prohibition on using or submitting student personally identifiable information with or to AI systems; (3) AI-generated material must align with Florida state-mandated curriculum and standards; (4) affirmative human-verification duty on educators to check AI output for accuracy, bias and appropriateness; (5) supervisor authorisation required before classroom or curriculum use by teachers. Procedural history matters for dating this entry: a July 21, 2026 session was a Rule Development Workshop, not an adoption, and at least one outlet reported the policy as adopted at that point — it was not. Adoption occurred at the July 28 meeting following the noticed public hearing. Context: the DeSantis administration was separately moving to regulate AI across Florida education from pre-K through doctoral programmes during the same period.
