Monroe County Board of Commissioners

Monroe County commissioners voted 2-0 on July 23, 2026 to end the county's contract with Flock Safety and take down its six automated license plate reader cameras. Sheriff Ruben Marté supported the move. The contract would otherwise have run until September 2027, and ending it early may cost the county up to about $3,000. Commissioners specifically chose to remove the cameras, not just cancel the contract, because other agencies could keep using the data if the cameras stayed up. Monroe County, home to Bloomington, was among the first Indiana counties to drop Flock.

Legal detail

Monroe County, Ind. Board of Commissioners action of Thursday, July 23, 2026 (2-0, members present): approval of a termination letter to Flock Safety (Atlanta) and authorization to remove all six county ALPR cameras. Contract term otherwise ran to September 2027; early termination cost up to ~$3,000 (~$500/camera). Sheriff Ruben Marté supported termination. Removal (not just non-use) was adopted on the stated rationale that other agencies could continue to access data from cameras left in place. Contract action, not an ordinance: the technology is not banned and a later board could re-contract.
