On September 21, 2026, the Zionsville Town Council approved a one-year moratorium on data centers, solar and wind farms and battery energy storage systems. The town has no permitted land use for these projects, which now could only come in through a special use permit, and the council directed its planning department and Plan Commission to review the zoning code and recommend whether and where they should be allowed, with public hearings before any vote. The town attorney said the move was partly to get ahead of developers after nearby Boone County adopted its own one-year data center moratorium.
