Enforced by
City of Statesville Planning and Development / City Council

Statesville City Council unanimously approved the second reading of a 180-day moratorium on data centers on Monday, September 14, 2026, and it took effect the same day. The moratorium halts acceptance, processing and approval of development applications for telecommunications facilities and data centers. It got longer as it moved: the city originally proposed 150 days, and the council extended it to 180 at first reading. That first reading also passed unanimously, in August, after a packed public hearing at which 15 residents spoke in support. Previously approved data centers are not affected — the pause reaches new applications only. The city was unusually public about its reasoning, publishing both a 'Why the City of Statesville Is Considering a Proposed Data Center Moratorium' explainer and a standing data center information page while the measure was pending. The six months are for staff to evaluate infrastructure capacity, environmental concerns, zoning regulations and community impacts before any further projects are considered. Statesville is the seat of Iredell County, north of Charlotte on the I-77 corridor.

Who is protected: Statesville residents, through a 180-day pause on new telecommunications and data center development applications while the city evaluates infrastructure capacity, environmental impact and zoning.
